lite-type is made to be used by keyboard alone, with a screen reader, or with the text read aloud, in every language it has.

With a screen reader

The trainer tells your screen reader each word before you type it. After a mistake it says the letter to type and the rest of the word. Between paragraphs it says "Press Enter", and when a run ends it reads out the result.

  • Open a lesson or a book.
  • Press Enter to reach the text. It is a text field, so your screen reader's forms mode begins on its own.
  • Type the text. The trainer reports each mistake itself, so you can turn your screen reader's character echo down.

It has been tried with NVDA on Windows and VoiceOver on macOS.

The text read aloud, without a screen reader

Turn on Read the text aloud in Settings and the trainer says the same words and letters itself, with the voices on your device. Which languages it can speak depends on the voices your device has.

Keyboard

  • Enter reaches the text, and when a text is done, goes on to the next.
  • Esc starts the text over.
  • / opens the palette, which reaches every page and setting by name.
  • Tab reaches every control. Pressing it first on a page offers a skip to the content, and on the leaderboards the arrow keys move between the boards.
  • The control in focus has a visible outline, and nothing needs a mouse.

Eyesight

  • A light and a dark theme, following your device or set on any page.
  • The page still fits the window at your browser's zoom, to 200% and beyond.
  • The text to type is 20px, and nothing is shown by colour alone.
  • Less moves when your device asks for reduced motion.

Not accessible yet

The two games, Pilot and Spaceship, and the Alphabet race are played by watching the screen and have no spoken form yet. The row of keys under the text, which shows the next key, is a picture; the trainer says the letter instead.

Standard and testing

The aim is WCAG 2.2 AA. Automatic checks run every time the site is built, and the pages are tried by hand with the screen readers named above.
