How the test works

Time
1, 3 or 5 minutes. The clock starts after the countdown.
Entries
Numbers of 3 to 7 digits, about a quarter with a decimal point and two digits after it, different every time.
Net KPH
The keys of the entries typed exactly right, each with its Enter, as keystrokes an hour. An entry with any mistake counts nothing.
Gross KPH
Every key you pressed, as keystrokes an hour.
Accuracy
The keys that matched the character expected, out of every key. Backspace is not counted.
Editing
Enter ends an entry; Space does nothing. Backspace fixes the entry you are on; an entry you have ended stays as typed.

What KPH means

KPH is keystrokes per hour: how many keys you would press in an hour at the pace you kept. Data-entry work counts keys, not words, because numbers have no words to count.

Net KPH counts only the keys of the numbers you typed exactly right, with the key that ended each one. Gross KPH counts every key you pressed. Accuracy is the share of keys that matched the digit expected where you typed them.

The speeds data-entry jobs ask for

Data-entry postings we read in November 2026 asked for 9,000 to 15,000 KPH on the keypad, 10,000 most often, and many test it before hiring. Some ask for a typing speed in words a minute as well, often 40 to 45 wpm.

Each employer sets its own figure and its own test. A score here is practice: it shows how you are doing, nothing more.

Where your fingers go on the keypad

Rest your right hand on 4, 5 and 6, with your middle finger on 5: it has a small bump so you can find it without looking. Your index finger takes 1, 4 and 7, your middle finger 2, 5, 8 and /, your ring finger 3, 6, 9, * and the point.

Your little finger takes −, + and Enter, and your thumb takes 0. Keep your eyes on the numbers, not on the keys; the drawing beside the test shows which finger takes each key.

Questions

What is a good 10-key speed?

Data-entry postings often ask for 9,000 to 15,000 KPH, 10,000 most often. Accuracy counts as much: a wrong digit counts the whole entry out.

Why does nothing type when I use the keypad?

Num Lock is probably off: the keypad then moves the cursor instead of typing digits. Press Num Lock; the page tells you when it sees the keypad with Num Lock off.

Can I take it on a laptop without a keypad?

Yes: digits and the point from the number row count too, and the result says when most of them came from there. A plug-in keypad is cheap if you want to practise for a job that tests it.

How is net KPH worked out?

The keys of every entry you typed exactly right, each with the Enter that ended it, are counted and scaled to an hour: 230 such keys in one minute is 13,800 net KPH.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

It is free, with no account. Signed in, your results are kept on your account and your best goes on the leaderboard; signed out, they stay on this device.
