How the test works
- Time
- 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes. The clock starts after a 3-second countdown.
- Text
- Common words in sentences, with capital letters and punctuation. Different words every time.
- Net speed
- Only words typed correctly count: their letters and the space after each, divided by five and by the minutes. A word with a mistake is not counted.

- All your keystrokes, divided by five and by the minutes.
- Accuracy
- The percentage of your keystrokes that matched the text.
- Editing
- Backspace corrects the word you are typing. The space bar moves on to the next word, and earlier words cannot be changed.
Questions
How is my speed worked out?
Net speed counts only the words you typed exactly right: their letters and the space after each, divided by five and by the minutes. The leaderboards rank by net speed.
How many minutes should I choose?
One minute is a quick check. Longer tests show whether you can keep up your speed. To prepare for a typing test for a job or an exam, choose 5 minutes.
What is a good typing speed?
Employers often ask for 30 to 40 words a minute with almost no mistakes. The leaderboards show the fastest results for 1, 2, 3 and 5 minutes.
Is the typing test free?
Yes, and you don't need an account. Sign in with Google to keep your results on every device and join the leaderboard.
