Number typing test
Type groups of digits on the number row, a space after each, for 1, 3 or 5 minutes.
Type each group of digits, then Space. Backspace fixes the group you are on.
How the test works
- Time
- 1, 3 or 5 minutes. The clock starts after the countdown.
- Text
- Groups of 1 to 6 random digits split by spaces, different every time. A group of two or more never starts with 0.
- Net KPH
- The keys of the groups typed exactly right, each with its space, as keystrokes an hour. A group with any mistake counts nothing.
- Gross KPH
- Every key you pressed, as keystrokes an hour.
- Accuracy
- The keys that matched the digit expected, out of every key. Backspace is not counted.
- Net wpm
- The same right keys as words a minute, five keys to a word, as the typing test counts them.
- Editing
- Space ends a group. Backspace fixes the group you are on; a group you have ended stays as typed.
What KPH means
KPH is keystrokes per hour: how many keys you would press in an hour at the pace you kept. Data-entry work counts keys, not words, because numbers have no words to count.
Net KPH counts only the keys of the numbers you typed exactly right, with the key that ended each one. Gross KPH counts every key you pressed. Accuracy is the share of keys that matched the digit expected where you typed them.
The speeds data-entry jobs ask for
Data-entry postings we read in November 2026 asked for 9,000 to 15,000 KPH on the keypad, 10,000 most often, and many test it before hiring. Some ask for a typing speed in words a minute as well, often 40 to 45 wpm.
Each employer sets its own figure and its own test. A score here is practice: it shows how you are doing, nothing more.
Questions
What is a good speed on a number typing test?
Most people type digits on the number row more slowly than words: 5,000 to 8,000 net KPH is a common start, and 10,000 or more is quick. Accuracy matters more than speed, since a wrong digit counts the whole group out.
Can I use the numeric keypad?
Yes, digits from the keypad count here too. To practise the keypad on its own, with Enter after each number, take the 10-key typing test.
How is net KPH worked out?
The keys of every group you typed exactly right, each with the Space that ended it, are counted and scaled to an hour: 230 such keys in one minute is 13,800 net KPH.
Why are the digits in groups?
Groups of different lengths are how numbers come in real work: codes, amounts, phone and account numbers. Space after each one lets the test count each group right or wrong.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
It is free, with no account. Signed in, your results are kept on your account and your best goes on the leaderboard; signed out, they stay on this device.
