Russian letters
Russian uses a 33-letter Cyrillic alphabet. Some letters look Latin but are not (р is r, с is s, н is n, в is v), and others have no English match: ж, ш, щ, ы, and the hard and soft signs ъ and ь. Ё is often printed as е, but it is a letter of its own, as in "ёлка" (fir tree) and "всё" (everything). Smart Lessons bring each one in once the letters before it are up to speed.
The standard layout is ЙЦУКЕН, named after its top row, and nearly every keyboard sold in Russia has it. It places letters by how often they are used, so а, о, е and н fall under or beside the index fingers. A phonetic layout puts letters on similar-sounding Latin keys instead, а on A and б on B, but each system has its own: Windows' Russian - Mnemonic types ч as ц then х, macOS' Russian – Phonetic has no ё, and Linux's puts ж on V and ч on =.

Tips for typing Russian
Start from the home row
The ЙЦУКЕН home row reads ф ы в а п р о л д ж э. А and о, the commonest vowels, are under the index fingers on F and J, so the home row alone spells words such as "вода" and "пол".
Reach for ё
Ё is on the key left of 1, a long reach for the left little finger. Many texts write е instead, but where the text has ё, type ё: practise "ещё" and "всё".
Punctuation moves
Б and ю take the comma and full stop keys, so on ЙЦУКЕН the full stop is on the key left of Right Shift, and Shift with it gives the comma. Х, ъ, ж and э sit under the right little finger, on the keys beyond P and L.
Prefer ЙЦУКЕН if you switch computers
A phonetic layout feels easy at first, but ж, ч, ш, щ and ю land somewhere different on each system. ЙЦУКЕН is the same on Windows, macOS (Russian – PC) and Linux, and on every Russian keyboard you will meet.
