Slovenian letters

Slovenian has three letters beyond a to z, the šumniki č, š and ž, and leaves q, w, x and y out of its own alphabet: they turn up only in foreign words. The šumniki are in everyday words such as "človek", "šola", "že" and "življenje", so a line of Slovenian rarely goes without one.

The Slovenian keyboard is QWERTZ and shared with Croatian: š and đ sit to the right of P, č and ć to the right of L, and ž by Enter. Đ and ć are there for Croatian and Serbian names. On a US or UK keyboard, Windows US-International has no caron, so add the Slovenian layout; on a Mac, ABC – Extended types č, š and ž with Option V then the letter.

On a Slovenian keyboard

Tips for typing Slovenian

Č and ć sit side by side

Č is right of L, under the right little finger, and ć is one key further. Slovenian words never need ć, so if one turns up in your text, the finger reached a key too far.

Š is straight above

Š sits right of P, one row up from č, for the same little finger. Short, common words such as "še", "šola" and "naš" are the ones to drill.

Ž is by Enter

Ž is at the far right of the home row, next to Enter. Reach for it with the right little finger and come back, without letting the hand slide; "že" and "življenje" give it plenty of work.

Learn where Z is

On QWERTZ the Z sits where QWERTY has Y, typed with the right index finger. Slovenian uses z all the time, in "z", "za" and "zdaj", and y almost never, so the swap pays off quickly.
