Ukrainian letters

Ukrainian is written in a 33-letter Cyrillic alphabet with four letters Russian lacks, ґ, є, і and ї, and without ё, ъ, ы or э. The apostrophe is part of the spelling, as in "мʼясо" (meat) and "сімʼя" (family). The letters come up constantly: "Україна", "їжа" (food), "є" (there is), "ґанок" (porch). Smart Lessons bring each letter in once the letters before it are up to speed.

The Ukrainian layout is ЙЦУКЕН, close to the Russian one: і takes the place of ы, є of э and ї of ъ. Ґ is the awkward one: Windows types it as AltGr with г, while macOS and Linux give it the \ key. On a Mac, і and и swap places compared with Windows, і on B and и on S. Add the layout to any US or UK keyboard; touch typists need no stickers.

Tips for typing Ukrainian

Watch the keys that differ from Russian

If you know the Russian layout, most keys carry over; the ones to retrain are і on S (B on a Mac), є on ' and ї on ]. Є and ї go to the right little finger, і to the left ring finger, or the left index on a Mac.

Ґ is rare but real

Ґ appears in a handful of common words, such as "ґанок" (porch) and "ґудзик" (button). On Windows hold AltGr with the right thumb and press Г on U; on a Mac or Linux, reach for \ with the right little finger.

The apostrophe is part of the word

Words such as "пʼять" (five) and "компʼютер" need it in the middle. On Windows and Linux it is the key left of 1; the site counts a plain ' as ʼ, so type it without breaking the word's rhythm.

Shift from the other hand

Use the left Shift for capitals typed with the right hand, such as Л in "Львів", and the right Shift for left-hand ones, such as К in "Київ".
