About this test
- Time
- 10 minutes: the speed paper (Paper I). The manuscript paper is not practised here.
- Text
- 2,250 keystrokes at Senior, 1,500 at Junior: five keystrokes to a word, two after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Marks
- Out of 100. Each mistake takes 1.25 off at Senior, 1.8 at Junior, and a word holds one mistake at most. The text not reached counts one mistake for every five keystrokes. Marks are rounded to a whole mark.
- Pass line
- 45 here. The board passes Junior and Senior at 90 of 200 over both papers, with at least 35 in each.
- Editing
- Backspace works, but a corrected word counts as a mistake, as erasing does on the typewriter. The arrow keys do nothing. The board's computer exam (from 2028) has not published its own rules.
- Keyboard
- English (US).

A practice test to the published rules. Not the official software, and not a certificate.
Questions
How are the marks worked out?
Out of 100, each mistake takes 1.25 marks off at Senior and 1.8 at Junior. A wrong, misspelt, extra or left-out word, a wrong capital letter or punctuation mark: each is one mistake, at most one to a word. The marks are rounded to a whole mark, a half rounding up.
Why does the text I didn't reach count?
The board counts the text left untyped as mistakes, one for every five keystrokes or part of five, so speed shows up in the marks. Reaching the end of the text in ten minutes is the grade's speed.
Why does a corrected word count as a mistake?
The exam is typed on a typewriter, where an erased or overtyped word is marked as a mistake. Backspace works here, but each word you correct is counted.
Is this the real GTE exam?
No. It follows the Directorate's published syllabus and scheme of valuation so you can practise to them, but it is not the exam, and it is the speed paper alone.
