Telugu letters

Telugu has its own script, so the tables have a row for every letter: the vowels and consonants, the vowel signs (guninthalu) that join a consonant, the pollu ్, and the marks ం and ః. A vowel has two forms, అ, ఆ, ఇ on their own and ా, ి, ీ after a consonant, so కా is క then ా. A consonant cluster is typed key by key with the pollu between, and the second consonant then shows as an ottu beneath the first: క, ్, క gives క్క.

Inscript is the same on Windows, macOS and Linux, apart from Linux typing ః and ఞ without Shift. It puts the vowel signs and the pollu under the left hand and the commonest consonants under the right, and Shift gives the full vowel on a sign's key (ా on E, ఆ on Shift+E) and the aspirated consonant (క on K, ఖ on Shift+K). A phonetic layout puts letters on the English keys that sound alike instead; macOS and Linux each have one, and they differ. Windows has none: its Telugu Phonetic keyboard turns whole words typed in English letters into Telugu, so there is no key to show.

On a US or UK keyboard

Windows: none (Telugu Phonetic converts whole words) · macOS: Telugu – QWERTY · Linux: Telugu (KaGaPa, phonetic)

Add it the same way. Letters sit on the English keys that sound alike, but macOS and Linux differ on several (ట, డ, ఞ and most vowels), so check your system's column.

Tips for typing Telugu

Start from the home row

On Inscript the left home keys A, S, D and F type ో, ే, ్ and ి, and the right ones J, K, L and ; type ర, క, త and చ. Words such as "కేక" and "చేత" need nothing else.

The sign comes after its consonant

Type a consonant, then its vowel sign: కి is క, then ి on F, and కొ is క, then ొ on the key left of 1. Practise "కిటికీ" and "పొలం" until it is automatic.

Ottulu are typed with the pollu

The pollu, ్ on D, joins two consonants: క, ్, క makes క్క, as in "అక్క", and ద, ్, ద makes ద్ద, as in "పెద్ద". The first consonant always comes first, however the ottu is drawn.

Use the same layout everywhere

Inscript is the same on every system and on most Telugu keyboard stickers, while the phonetic layouts differ between macOS and Linux and Windows has none. If you switch computers, learn Inscript.
